Retro Palette — mobile app

Support

Retro Palette is made by a small studio, and the people who answer this mailbox are the people who wrote the app. There is no ticket system, no chatbot and no support tier — just an email address that works.

Contact us

Email info@softwarefirst.gr with “Retro Palette” in the subject line. We aim to reply within two working days. We are in Athens, Greece (EET/EEST), so allow for the time difference if you are far away.

Common questions

I bought Pro but the palettes are still locked

Open the Pro screen and tap Restore purchases. That re-checks your purchase with the store and unlocks everything within a few seconds.

If it does not work, check that:

  • you are signed in to the same App Store or Google Play account you bought with;
  • the device has a working internet connection — restoring is the one thing the app cannot do offline;
  • you are on the same platform. A purchase made on Android cannot be restored on iOS, or vice versa: Apple and Google do not share purchase records, and we have no way to bridge them.

Still stuck? Email us with your store, your device model and the approximate date of purchase, and we will work it out.

Where does the converted image go?

Into your device's normal photo gallery, as a PNG, at the moment you tap save. There is no in-app library and no hidden folder — once it is saved, it is an ordinary photo you can share, edit or delete like any other.

If nothing appears, the most likely cause is that photo access was declined. See the next item.

The app cannot open or save photos

Retro Palette needs permission to read the photo you pick and to add the converted image back to your library. If you declined that prompt, grant it again in your device settings:

  • iOS: Settings → Retro Palette → Photos.
  • Android: Settings → Apps → Retro Palette → Permissions.

The app asks for nothing else — no location, no contacts, no camera.

My conversion looks noisy, muddy or washed out

Some source images fight the constraints harder than others. Things that usually help:

  • Pick a bolder pixel size. Chunky · 96px and Classic · 160px read far better than a full-resolution conversion, because the palette has fewer, larger areas to commit to.
  • Try a different palette. The NES conversion commits to about 13 colours for the whole image, so a scene with two competing colour moods will lose one of them. The C64 or PICO-8 palettes handle that better.
  • Toggle dithering off. On graphic, high-contrast subjects — logos, silhouettes, strong portraits — flat colour often looks more authentic than dithered texture.
  • Start from a higher-contrast photo. Four green shades cannot rescue a flat, grey image; they can do wonderful things with a well-lit one.
My export is smaller than the original photo

The free tier caps exports at 1024 px on the long side; Retro Palette Pro raises that to 4096 px. Aspect ratio is always preserved, and the app never upscales beyond your original.

Note that the pixel-size setting is a separate, deliberate effect: Classic · 160px renders the artwork at 160 pixels across and then scales it up with hard edges, which is what gives the chunky retro look.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. All conversion happens on your device, and the app contains no code that sends image data anywhere. The only network call it makes is the purchase check for the Pro unlock. The privacy policy spells this out in detail.

How do I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by the store you bought from:

If the app did not do what we said it does, email us first — it is usually faster, and we would rather fix the problem than take your money for something broken. See section 6 of the terms of use.

Can I use the images commercially?

Yes. The images you create are yours, with no attribution required and no licence owed to us. You are responsible for having the rights to the source photo you convert.

Will you add more palettes / batch conversion / a custom palette editor?

Possibly, and we genuinely like hearing which one you want most — it is the clearest signal we get about what to build next. Email us. We would rather ship a small app that works than a large one that does not, so the list moves slowly on purpose.

Does it work with emulators or ROMs?

No, and that is deliberate. Retro Palette handles no game data of any kind. A palette here is a list of colour values measured from the original display hardware, applied to photographs you already own.

Device requirements

PlatformMinimum versionDevices
iOS / iPadOSiOS 15.0 or lateriPhone and iPad
AndroidAndroid 10 (API 29) or laterPhones and tablets

An internet connection is needed only to buy or restore the Pro unlock. Everything else — including every conversion and every export — works with the device offline.

Reporting a bug

The app has no crash reporting and no analytics, which means we genuinely do not know something is wrong until someone tells us. If you hit a problem, this is the most useful thing you can send:

Device: e.g. iPhone 14, iOS 18.4 / Pixel 7, Android 15
App version: shown on the onboarding screen
Store: App Store or Google Play
Palette: e.g. NES
Pixel size: e.g. Classic · 160px
Dither: on / off
What happened: what you did, what you expected, what you got

A screenshot of the result helps enormously. Please do not send us a photo you would not want a stranger to see — we only need enough to reproduce the problem, and we delete what you send once it is fixed.

Send it to info@softwarefirst.gr.
